MB 2.0 revamp at a glance
Kotak Mahindra bank is one of India’s largest banks with a diverse customer base. I was a product designer in the digital team that worked on the bank’s biggest project, MB 2.0: complete revamp of Kotak's mobile banking app.
I worked as part of the 2 person squad that reimagined the payments feature of the app which included redesigning existing features and introducing new features using India’s centralised digital payment system, Unified Payment Interface (UPI, like Interac in Canada).

Key takeaways
🤔 Challenges
-
Being one of the largest banks in the country, there is a diverse range of customers (like: both educated and uneducated kids, young adults, adults, and older adults) and designing for everyone is a challenge.
🫡 Learnings
-
This taught me to design for inclusion, so that as many people as possible could use e-transfer through mobile application. Our approach was rapid prototyping with user testing sessions at every stage with diverse user group.
-
Designing for payments was complex because we had to consider the privacy of users and security of highly sensitive data and high value transactions
-
The design incorporated features and elements that educated about different scams. With a keen understanding of the technology which made the banking thefts and scams possible, the design took measure to avoid them, such as not allowing users to make payments while on call or sharing screens.
-
The design needed to lead to a robust system, as more than 20 million people would be using it for financial transactions.
-
Since the technology needed to process a high volume of secure transactions, the design team worked closely with developers. For example, while testing the developed prototype, we figured that the design was slow to load, and could crash the system. Hence, we changed the design to present the data in a concise manner to reduce the processing time.
The rockstar design team
We worked remotely for almost 2 years and just met each other during zoom work sessions/standup calls.
Our bi-weekly Friday chill and gaming sessions were all about fun, de-stressing and team bonding.
Finally, we were successfully able to plan and actually go to our workation in Goa, India. Meeting everyone after all that time in person was a surreal experience. Getting to work in person with the team was a refreshing experience after a long time of remote working.

🧑🏻💻
The mobile baking app is under development and thus the contents of it are under NDA till the time it is released in the market.
I would be happy to discuss more about it during an interview/coffee chat.
